Our story
From one machine and three people to Sri Lanka's largest paving company
When SMS Holdings started in 2001, interlock paving was virtually unknown in Sri Lanka. Imported from India and sold at steep margins, paving stones were a luxury reserved for petrol sheds. We changed that — and in doing so, helped transform the very surfaces Sri Lanka walks, drives, and builds on.
We began with one machine and three employees. Every paving stone made on day one broke. We kept trying for a week — modifying our technology, mixture, and methods — until something struck. We haven't looked back since.
The petrol shed at D.S. Senanayake junction became our first installation. Over two decades later, those stone blocks remain exactly as they were.
Executed construction works under hazardous conditions during the conflict period, earning recognition from ICTAD for outstanding service.
Two talented employees designed and built an automated paving block machine — a breakthrough we still use today with ongoing technology improvements.
Recognized as Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the Year, affirming our contribution to the country's construction industry.

When Shehan Seneviratne entered the designing and manufacturing of interlocking pavement solutions in 2001, the concept was virtually unknown in Sri Lanka. Paving stones were mostly imported from India at steep margins and used only in limited applications like petrol station forecourts.
Shehan saw an opportunity where others saw a niche. He began manufacturing and installing beautifully designed paving pathways, and what started as an experiment quickly became a popular choice across the country — from parking areas and commercial spaces to residential driveways. The beauty and diversity in colours and shapes that Sri Lankans enjoy today simply didn't exist back then.
Once SMS Holdings started supplying, paving stones began appearing across the island — beautifying pavements, walking paths, and public areas used daily. Today, Shehan's founding vision remains at the heart of everything SMS Holdings does: delivering world-class paving solutions that exceed customer expectations, backed by 25+ years of hands-on expertise and a personal commitment to quality and innovation.
